Operation Slapstick was the code name for the Allied operation to occupy the Italian naval base in Taranto . On September 9, 1943, the allied cruisers' association, coming from Bizerta, landed the British 1st Airborne Division in Taranto; there was no resistance. In the port, the British mine-layer HMS Abdiel sank due to a mine barrier laid by German speedboats when leaving the port the previous evening (149 dead). During this operation, the British Major General George F. Hopkinson was killed .
