The Damascus Opera House (officially Dar al-Assad for Culture and the Arts , Arabic دار الأسد للثقافة والفنون, DMG Dār al-Asad li-ṯ-ṯiqāfa wa-l-funūn ) is the national opera house in the Syrian capital Damascus .

Location

The opera house is on Umayyad Square (ساحة الأمويين), a large roundabout about two kilometers west of the old town, on its southeast side.

history

The Damascus Opera House was planned at the beginning of the reign of Hafiz al-Assad , but the first construction work did not take place until after his death in 2000. The opera house was opened on May 7, 2004 by his son Bashar al-Assad and his wife Asma al- Assad opened.

Architecture and equipment

The opera house is a five-story building with an opera stage, a theater stage and a multifunctional hall. The main hall has 1331 seats, 2 balconies and 20 boxes. A college for theater, a college for music and a ballet school are also located in the building complex.
