Asma al-Assad (2003)

Asma al-Assad ( Arabic أسماء الأسد, DMG Asmāʾ al-Asad ), née Asma Fawwaz al-Achras  /أسماء فواز الأخرس / Asmāʾ Fauwāz al-Aḫras (born  August 11, 1975 in London ) is a Syrian financial analyst who grew up in Great Britain and has been the First Lady of Syria since 2000 as the wife of Bashar al-Assad .

Career

Asma al-Assad's father Fawwaz Achras, a cardiologist living and practicing in London , was originally from an influential Sunni family in Homs, Syria . Asma grew up in London in the West Acton district . Despite her Muslim origins, she attended a Church of England denominational school and later switched to a non-denominational school, where she was nicknamed "Emma". After graduating, she studied computer science at King's College London .

After completing her studies, Asma worked as a financial analyst for Deutsche Bank and JPMorgan Chase & Co.

Wife of Bashar al-Assad

Asma probably met her future husband Bashar al-Assad while he was studying in London in the early 1990s. What is known is that the two remained in contact even after Bashar's return to Syria in 1994. The wedding in December 2000, shortly after Baschar took office, took place as a surprise for outsiders. The marriage has so far produced three children.

In contrast to her predecessor as First Lady , Anisa Machluf, Asma al-Assad plays a more publicly visible role, which has already led to conflicts with her sister-in-law Bushra al-Assad .

In April 2012, the wives of the German and British UN ambassadors appealed to Asma al-Assad in the form of an impressive Internet video to work to end the bloodshed in the civil war in Syria .

In her first TV interview after the outbreak of the Syrian civil war, she stated that she had received several offers to leave the country with her children. However, the offers did not come from Syrians. In addition, she raised allegations against the West, which had made the difficult humanitarian situation possible through sanctions and was thus to blame for the economic consequences that predominantly affect the Syrian people. Your foreign assets have been frozen as part of the sanctions against the Syrian government . In addition, the British government revoked British- born Asma al-Assad from her British citizenship .

In August 2018, it became known that Asma al-Assad was diagnosed with breast cancer .
