The yellow cereal fly ( Opomyza florum ) is a fly from the family of grass flies (Opomyzidae).

features

The slender orange-yellow flies reach a length of 3.5–6 mm. The wings have a dark speckled pattern typical of the species: the outer edge is not clearly blackened, as is the case with some other species of the genus, but only around the three cross veins and at the wing tip around the ends of the radii . There are no additional cross veins.

The mesonotum is reddish-yellow, in the middle without or at most with an only slightly darker longitudinal ligament. Only the bases of the dorsocentral bristles are clearly colored black.

distribution and habitat

The species is represented in large parts of Europe. In addition to the edges of forests, their habitat is also formed by agricultural areas.

Way of life

The adults of the species usually hatch in June and July. They can be observed in meadows and forest areas until the end of August. Later, until the end of October, the flies stay in grain fields, where they lay their eggs on the ground near the host plants. In contrast to other species of the families, Opomyza florum 's eggs overwinter . In spring, the maggots hatch and migrate to the host plant. They mine grass stalks and are considered to be potential grain pests which, when heavily infested, cause feeding damage, especially to winter wheat , winter barley and winter rye . Pupation takes place around May in the lower parts of the host plant.
