Square in Opus Romanum construction

Opus Romanum ( Latin for "Roman work") is the name of the method of construction of squares in the Lower Austrian Mostviertel , in which red brick layers alternate with layers of stone and gravel and the outer walls of the squares are impregnated with emblematic patterns.

Up until the middle of the 19th century, square courtyards were built using only mud bricks ; later, when the many Italian guest workers came to the country to build the Western Railway , they also learned about the brick kiln , for which the clay soils of the Mostviertel were particularly suitable.
