The Order of the Holy Bishop Plato is an order of merit of the Church . It is awarded by the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church (EAÕK).

history

The Order of the Holy Bishop Plato was founded in 1922 by the General Assembly of the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church. It has been awarded since 1924. The Orthodox Order of Merit commemorates the martyrdom of the Estonian Orthodox Bishop Plato , who was murdered by Soviet Russian troops in Tartu in January 1919 . Bishop Plato was canonized by the Orthodox Churches in 2000.

Award

According to the ecclesiastical statutes, the order is bestowed on both clergy and secular persons for services to the church by the Tallinn Metropolitan of the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church. It can also be given to non-Orthodox people. The execution of the order shows the St. Andrew's cross as a symbol of martyrdom.

The medal is awarded in three classes:

  • First class - breast star
  • Second class - on the collar
  • Third grade - left breast, on ribbon

One of the first to bear the order was the Estonian politician Konstantin Päts in December 1924 .
