Order of the Heavenly Cross

The order of the heavenly cross , also order of the rose adorned with pearls , was a Russian knightly order . It was donated in 1557 as court honor by Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible as a sign of bravery, loyalty and merit in order to preserve the memory of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great . The cross of Christ is said to have appeared to him in a cloud . The bearers were called rose knights.

The decoration was a gold medal on a 42-link gold chain. The medallion showed the ascension of Christ .
