Kandau Ordensburg

The remains of the Kandau Ordensburg ( Latvian Kandavas pilsdrupas ) are located near Kandava (German Baltic: Kandau) in Latvia . The castle was an order castle of the Livonian Order , later the administrative seat of the Duchy of Courland and Zemgale .

history

A Curonian castle on the spot, on the road from Riga via Goldingen to Prussia , was mentioned in a document as early as 1231. In the cure contract of 1253, the place was placed under the rule of the Livonian Order, and the Order Castle was probably built soon afterwards. For the year 1318 it is testified that Kandau Castle already existed, since Master of the Order Gerhard von Jork was staying there at that time . From 1383 to 1560, 17 bailiffs of Kandau have been handed down as rulers .

At the time of the Duchy of Courland , Kandau Castle became the administrative center of the main Candau team . Duke Jakob Kettler built the powder tower with a four-story roof on the remains of the aforementioned medieval fortification.

On June 16, 1659 the Swedes occupied Kandau Castle. During the Great Northern War , the Kandau region was reoccupied by the Swedes in August 1701. In 1705 the castle came under Russian and in 1706 again under Swedish occupation. From 1840 the castle ruins were used for the construction of the surrounding houses, until the castle gate and some wall fragments were preserved in 1870.

In the 19th century, the tower on the east side of the castle came into private ownership and was used as a residential building until the 1930s. In 1902 the park was created in the area of the castle ruins. The Grove of Unity (Vienibas birze) was planted next to the Powder Tower in 1935.

Building

The castle consisted of a rectangular main building about 30 m wide, which was surrounded by a 150 m long, 50 m wide castle ring. On its east side, outside the castle ring, stood the Dansker tower on the slope of the Abau river. To the north of the main building there was a wide parcham, to the south a larger outer bailey.
