Orehovečki ( German Orechowetschki ; Hungarian Orehóczi , Orehoczy ) is the name of an old Croatian noble family that originally came from Sveti Petar Orehovec near Križevci in the former Bjelovar-Križevci county in northern Croatia and reached its peak in the 17th century. Through the marriage connections, the sex was connected to many other influential noble families, including Keglević , Patačić , Ratkaj and Alapić . Some members of the sex were appointed to high government and military ranks , as well as prelates .

historical overview

In the written sources, the first members of the sex were mentioned since the 13th century. Pavao / Paul Orehovečki lived around 1300, his son Juraj / Georg was named in 1334 and his grandson Martin was born around 1320 (he died after 1375). After their property in Sveti Petar Orehovec, they had the family name Orehovečki since the 16th century.

In the centuries that followed, the noble family expanded their fortunes in the towns of Guščerovec , Tosovec , Trem and Psarjevo . The Guščerovec branch of the family achieved a further rise when Stjepan / Stephan / Orehovečki (* around 1640; † 1703), 1690 was elevated to the rank of count . He was a son of Baron Gašpar / Kaspar Orehovečki (* around 1600, † 1672), Vice- Ban of Croatia, who served under the Ban and general Nikola Zrinski . Since Stjepan's son Stanislav / Stanislaus (* around 1681; † 1727) later remained without male descendants and died in 1727, the count's branch of the family died out.

Castles and Palaces

The noble family Orehovečki owned some castles and chateaus in what was then Croatia, mostly in the north, including the castles Veliki Kalnik and Mali Kalnik , as well as the Gornja Rijeka castle , near the town of Križevci .
