The Orell Füssli Thalia AG (OFT) is a 2013 founded joint venture of the Swiss group Orell Füssli with the German Douglas Holding owned bookstore chain Thalia . Both companies each hold 50 percent of the shares in the new stock corporation with headquarters in Zurich , and the board of directors also has equal representation.

Orell Füssli brought its book trade division Orell Füssli Buchhandlungs AG , in which the German chain Hugendubel has a 49 percent stake, with 14 branches and an online shop books.ch (400 employees, 115 million francs in sales), and Thalia its 22 Swiss bookstores and the online shop buch.ch (650 employees, 133 million francs turnover). Purchasing, marketing, IT, human resources, logistics, etc. have been merged.

According to the company's own information, in 2016 more than CHF 200 million. Sales reported.

The aim of the merger, which created the largest brick-and-mortar bookstore chain and also the largest online bookseller in Switzerland, is to reduce administrative expenses and thus maintain competitiveness in the face of increasing competition from globally active online booksellers, especially the US group amazon . The Swiss, German and Austrian competition authorities have approved the merger without reservation. Orell Füssli Thalia AG commenced business on October 1, 2013, initially under the previous brands. At the start, the share capital was increased to 14 million Swiss francs through contributions in kind. In 2016, the website was largely switched to Orell Füssli , so that the name Thalia disappeared from the Swiss book market. Some long-standing regional names such as Stauffacher in Bern, Rösslitor in St. Gallen and ZAP * in Valais are retained. The thalia.ch webshop has been integrated into orellfuessli.ch since January 2017. The company is now also appearing online with an Orell Füssli brand.
