Orendel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Orendel is a Middle High German verse epic in Middle Franconian . It was made at the end of the 12th century , but has only survived in much later versions. There was a handwritten version from 1477 (burned in Strasbourg in 1870) as well as a printed version and a printed prose version, both Augsburg editions from 1512 .

In the musician's poem , which is a mixture of the legend of saints and the adventure of a knight , a courtship and kidnapping story is told, in which the legend of the gray skirt of Christ protecting his wearer Orendel in battle is woven. The late antique novel about Apollonios of Tire was used as a framework for the Orendel. The poem was supposed to stimulate the pilgrimage to the Holy Rock in Trier .

Orendel, the son of the king of Trier, is supposed to marry Bride, the queen of Jerusalem. His fleet sinks due to a collision with an iceberg and he survives alone.
