The Organ Pipe Peaks ( German Orgelpfeifengipfel ) are a 11 km long series of pointed mountain peaks in the Antarctic Ross Dependency . They are part of the Gothic Mountains in the Queen Maud Mountains immediately north of Mount Harkness and east of the Scott Glacier .
The geological team around Quin Blackburn (1900-1981) discovered the formation in December 1934 during the second Antarctic expedition (1933-1935) of the American polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd and gave it the descriptive name because of the similarity to the arrangement of pipes in a church organ .
