Mount Harkness is a 1900 m high mountain on the eastern edge of the Antarctic Ross Dependency . It rises in the Queen Maud Mountains 2.5 km south of the Organ Pipe Peaks and flanks the Scott Glacier to the east .
The geological team around Quin Blackburn (1900-1981) discovered the mountain in December 1934 during the second Antarctic expedition (1933-1935) of the American polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd . Byrd named the mountain after Robert Bruce Harkness Jr. (1908–1933), a late friend of expedition member Richard Spofford Russell Jr. (1908–1984).
