Organomegaly

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As organomegaly refers to the abnormal, often morbid , enlargement of one or more organs .

There are separate names for certain organs that are abnormally enlarged. For example, in an enlarged liver a hepatomegaly , an enlarged heart a cardiomegaly and an enlarged spleen, a splenomegaly before. It is not an independent clinical picture, but a secondary organ change, the cause of which is another underlying disease.

In the POEMS syndrome ( polyneuropathy , organomegaly, endocrinopathy , monoclonal gammopathy , skin changes), several organs show abnormal enlargements.

The cause of the abnormal organ enlargement are often autoimmune diseases or metabolic diseases such as Gaucher's disease or Fabry's disease .
