Organon of the healing arts

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Organon der Heilkunst ( Latin : organum tool) is a work of Samuel Hahnemann and the basic work of homeopathy . During Hahnemann's lifetime, a total of five German editions were published, each of which contained considerable revisions in some cases. The fifth edition was reprinted several times in German. A sixth edition, personally revised by Hahnemann, did not appear for the first time until 1921, more than 75 years after Hahnemann's death. This has since been reissued several times in German. In addition, the book was translated into at least ten languages, including English, French and Spanish, and had several editions in these languages.

Hahnemann had already used fragments from his previously published writings for the first edition. In preparation for the following editions, he took one copy each, added a few sentences, crossed out others, and pasted notes with completely new paragraphs. He never had enough time in a row to create a piece of work from a single source. Therefore, the Organon has a patchwork structure in the later editions. Within a single sentence there are sometimes parts that are twenty years older than the rest and reflect different, overlapping lines of development. Therefore it is possible that today's followers with different views refer to one and the same work by Hahnemann.

In view of the dogmatic keynote of the later editions, the “Organon” is often referred to as the “Bible of Homeopathy” . The fifth edition is characterized, among other things, by various verbal injuries by Hahnemann both against other doctors and against homeopaths who are not loyal to him.

content

The sixth edition of the Organon der Heilkunst ( 1842) consists of two forewords, an introduction and 291 paragraphs in which the principles of healing and homeopathy are presented. In the introduction and numerous footnotes to the paragraphs, homeopathy is compared to previous medicine and presented as the only "rational healing art".

pads

  • The first edition appeared in Dresden in 1810, still under the title Organon der rationellen Heilkunde .
  • The fourth edition appeared in 1829. It does not yet speak of life force or principle, as in the following editions, but of the state of health or human condition that homeopathic remedies could have an effect.
  • The last edition published during Hahnemann's lifetime was the fifth from 1833.
  • Hahnemann completed the sixth and final edition by hand, but it was only published long after his death, namely in 1921 by Richard Haehl. Since then, the sixth edition of "Organon" has been regarded as the most important basic work of homeopathy. A text-critical edition of this last edition was published in 1992. According to this, Haehl's manuscript copy in all probability does not correspond to Hahnemann's ideas. Hahnemann probably wanted to publish a version that had been shortened by the long introduction and was much slimmer.
  • The 6th edition was reissued and stylistically completely revised by the pharmacist Kurt Hochstetter as edition 6B and appeared as the 2nd edition in 1978 in Heidelberg.
