The Hazel Wright organ is named after Hazel Wright from Chicago, who donated two million dollars to the Crystal Cathedral , a megachurch in Garden Grove, California , to build it.

Building history

The organ in its current form emerged from the combination of two instruments: an organ built in 1962 (100 stops ) from Lincoln Center in New York and the organ built in 1977 (94 stops), which was already in use in the community. It was built by the Italian organ builder Fratelli Ruffatti .

After adding a further 29 registers at the inauguration in 1982 and other later additions, the organ now has 270 registers, 31 digital registers and more than 16,000 pipes. It is controlled from two gaming tables .

On the occasion of the rededication of the church to the cathedral of the Diocese of Orange , the organ was completely expanded in 2013 and renovated in the workshops of Fratelli Ruffatti in Padua. The installation of the organ began in spring 2019, and the organ consecration is planned for May 2020.

Disposition since 1982

The organ system is distributed over four locations in the room. In the top of the choir (choir loft) in the north of the church there is the so-called Chancel Organ or Main Organ with a general console. The so-called Gallery Organ with a general console is located in the south gallery . In the west and east points there are no independent instruments, but rather partial works: in the west the so-called Epistle Organ , in the east the so-called Gospel & Echo Organ .
