Companies
The company's history dates back to 1901, when Shōgorō Yoshida ( 吉田 庄五郎 ), the founder, opened a watch shop in Tokyo. For a long time, Orient was number three among the major Japanese watch manufacturers , behind Citizen and Seiko , before Casio was ousted by the growing popularity of quartz watches in the 1970s. During this time, too, Orient insisted on classic design and predominantly mechanical movements. To this day, Orient has manufactured its movements entirely itself. Seiko has been the sole majority owner of Orient Watch since 2017 .
High-priced watches, for example from the Royal Orient brand, are predominantly sold on the Japanese market . This brand is currently no longer available.
