Orléanists

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Orléanists were called the followers of the House of Orléans in France .

On the one hand, during the French Revolution, it was the name given to the partisans of Louis Philippe II. Joseph de Bourbon , Duke of Orléans (called Philippe Égalité ). On the other hand, it has been used to describe the supporters of Ludwig Philip I during the July monarchy since 1830 .

The latter mostly belonged to the upper middle class ( bourgeoisie ) and disbanded from 1848 after the overthrow of the French king, as they could now hardly oppose the rival parties of the Legitimists, Bonapartists and Republicans.

After the war of 1870/71 , the Orléanists came back to the fore; meanwhile, their timid cautiousness, their exaggerated consideration for the clericals, finally the attempt to merge the conservative elements with the legitimist party to obtain the head of the Orléans family, the Count of Paris , and after the death or abdication of the Count of Chambord, the legitimate successor to the kingship to secure, alienated the party many liberal members who turned to the republic. Since the extinction of the older Bourbon line with the death of the Count of Chambord (August 24, 1883), the Orléanists have merged completely with the Legitimists .
