Ormen Lange is the name of a natural gas and condensate field on the Norwegian continental shelf . It is located about 120 kilometers (km) northwest of Kristiansund . The gas field is named after the famous longboat Ormurin langi owned by Olav Tryggvason , a Norwegian Viking king of the 10th century.

history

The gas field was discovered in 1997 and production started in September 2007. While the Ormen Lange project was being driven forward by Norsk Hydro in the project development phase , Shell took over operations on December 1, 2007.

Ormen Lange's processing facility

With an exploitation period of 30 to 40 years, the total capacity was estimated at 397 billion Sm³ ( standard cubic meters , i.e. under normal conditions at a temperature of 0 degrees Celsius and 1013.25 hPa ). After the production capacity was increased in the first two to three years, 70 million Sm³ are now being promoted per day.

technical description

The gas field manages without any visible installations such as production platforms. Ormen Lange's entire infrastructure is anchored to the sea floor at a depth of 800 to 1100 meters (m). Gas and condensate are transported via two pipelines for processing to Nyhamna on the island of Gossa near Aukra . The gas is then pumped to England via the Langeled Pipeline over a distance of 1166 km.

The total cost of the project was estimated at 66 billion crowns (about 8.5 billion euros).
