The Orpheum in Nuremberg is a former cinema and today's event hall. It is located at Johannisstraße 32a in the St. Johannis district on the almost pointed corner property on Burgschmietstraße.

history

The Orpheum light games have been run by the owner Frida Stehr since 1910. At that time, the movie theater was on the ground floor of the tenement building that was then here. In 1912 the cinema was bought by Leonhard Scharf. In 1918 the district cinema had 190 seats. In 1940 the Orpheum theater accommodated 186 guests. In 1943 the building was destroyed in an air raid on Nuremberg .

After the Second World War , Leonhard Scharf built his own cinema building with 600 seats and air conditioning instead of the destroyed residential and commercial building. The demonstration technology consisted of a Bauer B 8 projector with a sound film Eurodyn sound amplifier. The architect of the Orpheum-Film-Theater , which was completed and reopened in 1949, was the government architect Fritz Loesch, who lived opposite at Burgschmietstrasse 50. The head building in an exposed location is an idiosyncratic example of German architecture between traditionalism and early post-war modernism . The "Orpherla", as it was also called by the people of Nuremberg, remained in the family until 1964. After the death of his son, the owner Hermann Scharf sold the building. From then on it was used as a supermarket , mattress shop and furniture store, among other things .

At the end of the 2000s, the building was renovated and rented out for two years under the name Orpheum for family and company celebrations. In 2010 the Mobile Cinema Association in Nuremberg showed films there for the first time. After another vacancy, the Orpheum was taken over by a private organizer in 2014, who in turn uses and rents it out as an event hall.
