Today's Orpheum was opened in 1957 as a cinema under the name "Zentrum 22" with a capacity of over 500 seats. In 1976 the cinema - like many others in Vienna at that time - was closed and in the meantime functioned as a youth center . The Donaustadt cultural association began to hold various cultural events here, and the Löwinger stage also used the former cinema several times for recordings.

In 1981 the Donaustadt cultural association finally took over what was now known as the "Orpheum" stage and staged a wide range of events on it, such as B. theater performances, concerts, readings and lectures. In the early 1990s, the Orpheum was threatened with permanent closure; a supermarket was to be built on the site. The cultural association prevented this by finding a group of operators who took over the house and agreed to use it for 200 days a year, while the cultural association could use it for its own program the rest of the time.

In November 1996 the Orpheum was reopened after extensive renovation work. The main focus of the new program is on cabaret, but concerts and children's theater performances are also held. The highlights of the past few years include club appearances by REM and Bryan Adams .
