Face
A working face is the location of a route or a tunnel , at the mining means tunneling takes place. Together with the lateral boundary surfaces, it forms the joint .
In underground mining, that boundary surface of a bottom (horizontal) or inclined pit that lies in the direction of advance, on which excavation is taking place or has taken place using mining methods and rock has been extracted, is referred to as the "face". The terms tunnel breast and tunnel breast are used in the same sense.
The mining fronts used for the direct extraction of raw materials are generally not referred to as the face.
