Orthographic variant
An orthographic variant (abbreviated orth. Var. , English orthographical variant ) is in taxonomy , more precisely in scientific nomenclature , a typographical or typographical error in a scientific publication that has led to a slightly different name, which is inadvertently already for you known organism was introduced. The term is common in botany and is used as a spelling mistake in zoology . The rules to be followed when an orthographic variant occurs are anchored in the respective nomenclature codes .
botany
In botanical nomenclature, an orthographic variant is a different spelling of the same name. The generic names Hieronima and Hyeronima are z. B. orthographic variants of Hieronyma . One of the spellings must be recognized as valid . In this case the spelling Hieronyma was protected as a nomen conservandum and therefore represents the correct spelling.
Unintentional use of one of the other spellings has no consequences: the name can be used as if it were spelled correctly. Any subsequent usage must be corrected.
Orthographic variants are dealt with in Article 61 of the ICBN .
zoology
In zoology, “orthographic variants” do not formally exist; a typing or printing error is treated as a "slip" , an unintentional error. The first reviser of a taxon is allowed to select a variant for binding future use, but these errors have no formal existence in other respects. Unintentional errors are dealt with in Articles 32 and 33 of the ICZN .
