Local file

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A local file is a collection of documents that contains archaeological information about a district . This includes a directory of sites (usually with a map), reports of finds, excavation reports and other information, e.g. inspection reports, photos, newspaper clippings and official correspondence.

In Germany, the first local files were created in the 19th century. They are kept by the archaeological state offices or their equivalent institutions (see list of German monument specialist authorities ). They are normally part of the institutions' reference inventory. For inspection, a written application is required, from which a legitimate scientific or public concern emerges. Purely private use of the location files is not possible in all federal states.
