The Osaka Stadium ( Japanese 大阪 ス タ ヂ ア ム , Ōsaka Sutajiamu ), often also Ōsaka Kyūjō ( 大阪 球場 , "[Base] ball stadium Osaka") or named after the location next to the Namba station of the Nankai Railway Namba Kyūjō , was a ballpark in Osaka , Japan .
history
The building was designed by the Japanese architect Sakakura Junzō in the 1940s. The foundation stone for the stadium was laid on January 9, 1950. It was built on the tobacco plantation area from early January to early September 1950 after the Second World War and after the air raids on Osaka . The stadium was opened on September 12, 1950. It belonged to the Ōsaka Sutajiamu Kōgyō KK ( 大阪 ス タ ヂ ア ム 興業engl ; English Osaka Stadium Corporation ), in which the Nankai Denki Tetsudō, which also belonged to the station and team, was involved. It served as the home of the sports teams Nankai Hawks (1950-1988), the Kintetsu Pearls (1950-1957) and the Taiyō Shōchiku [contracted Yōshō] Robins (1953-1954).
The singer Madonna began her Who's That Girl World Tour with two sold-out performances in the stadium on June 14th and 15th, 1987. These were the artist's first concerts in Japan. Michael Jackson ended the first section of his Bad World Tour from October 10th to 12th, 1987 with three also sold out concerts in the venue . The British rock musician Eric Clapton ended his Clapton Knopfler tour on May 5th , together with guests Elton John and Mark Knopfler November 1988 in the stadium.
In November 1998 the stadium closed and began to deteriorate. The demolition work on the building began on February 3, 2000 and was completed at the end of the same year. The baseball stadium was completely replaced by a shopping mall and office buildings built as part of Namba Park from early 2001 to April 2007. The Nagai Stadium serves as a replacement for the demolished stadium.
