The Oscar column ( Norwegian : Oscarsstøtten ) is a monument on the North Cape plateau in Norway .

It was built in 1873 to commemorate the visit to the North Cape of the then Swedish King Oskar II on July 2, 1873 . The column also served to mark the outer border of the former confederation of Sweden and Norway. 16 days after his visit, Oskar II was also crowned King of Norway. In retrospect, his visit is considered to be the beginning of the era of mass tourism in the North Cape.

On the front there is the inscription below a crown:

Kong
OSCAR II
besteg
Nordkap
d. July 2,
1873

Oscar is written in cursive on the back .

Location

Until the globe was erected in 1978, the Oscar column stood in its current location approx. 150 m north of the old North Cape Hall. It is now about 50 m west of the new North Cape Hall and has a new, smaller base. In the foreground of the 1973 photo is the predecessor of the midnight sun monument erected a little further south in 1984 .
