Fires

A number of fires hit the market in 2018. In January 2018, a fire destroyed 3500 square meters of the market. Faulty electrical wiring was identified as the reason for this fire. As compensation for the damage, the 74 affected stand owners were granted a one-year delay in repaying their loans. In March there was another fire on the premises of the Osh Bazaar, this time the authorities assumed arson. A third fire occurred on April 13, 2018. The fire broke out in the early morning hours and destroyed 5412 square meters on the site. Nine people, including seven firefighters, were injured in the fire. The Kyrgyz authorities tried to determine the cause of the renewed fire. Again, arson was given as a possible cause, but failure to observe safety rules could also have triggered the fire. As a consequence of the renewed fire, sellers protested in front of the White House in Bishkek and demanded compensation payments as well as concessions on the rent for the stands during the reconstruction. Further protests in front of the Kyrgyz parliament led to a conversation between ten representatives of the protesters and the Kyrgyz Prime Minister Sapar Isakov. He promised to rebuild the market as quickly as possible.
