Ottoman-Safavid War
The two empires of the Ottomans and the Safavids met in several Ottoman-Safavid wars between the 16th and 17th centuries. On the one hand it was about the political supremacy in Asia Minor , Mesopotamia and the Caucasus , on the other hand both parties continued the old internal Islamic conflict between the confessions of the Sunnis and Shiites . Since the establishment of the Safavid Empire in 1501, the Shia had been the state religion of Persia, while in the Ottoman Empire a special form of the Sunna was the official religion of the rulers.
