The Ottoman-Safavid War from 1578 to 1590 was a military conflict between the Persian Safavid Empire, first under Mohammed Chodabanda , later under Abbas I , and the Ottoman Empire under Murad III. .

Course of war

The Ottomans began the war with the aim of occupying Azerbaijan and the Caucasus . They conquered Tbilisi (1578), Kars and Tabriz (1585). Georgia was incorporated into the empire as a dependent vassal state. As a result, the Ottomans were able to rule Azerbaijan and the Caucasus to the Caspian Sea .

A peace treaty was signed in Istanbul on March 21, 1590, in which Persia accepted the Ottoman conquests and promised to end Shiite propaganda in Ottoman territories and the persecution of Sunnis in their own country.

The beginning of the Ottoman-Safavid War temporarily diverted Ottoman interests from European affairs. In Europe, the Ottoman Empire had previously formed an alliance with France and supported the Dutch uprising against the Spanish Habsburgs .
