Osroes I.

Osroes I (also in Greek Chosroes on coins ) was a Parthian king who ruled from around 89 to 128. He was the brother of his predecessor Pakoros . In 113 Emperor Trajan planned an attack on Parthia. The pretext was Armenia , where a ruler appointed by the Parthian side ( Parthamasiris , son of Pakoros) ruled, which happened without consultation with Rome . Osroes I sent ambassadors to Athens in 113 to change the mind of the emperor and avert a war, but received no answer.

In the following year Trajan invaded Armenia, where he met no resistance and where Parthamasiris surrendered immediately, but died a short time later. In the following years some Parthian vassal states ( Edessa ) were conquered and in 116 he conquered the capital Ctesiphon . Then Trajan marched into the Charakene , whose ruler surrendered immediately. Shortly afterwards, however, there were various rebellions in the rear of the Romans (among other things, the Jews had risen). After Trajan's death, Emperor Hadrian renounced most of the conquests and withdrew the frontier.

During his entire reign, Osroes I not only had to fight with the Romans, but also with an opposing king: Vologaeses III. which presumably predominated in the east of the empire. After 128 Osroes I is no longer documented on coins and Vologaeses III. seems to have finally taken power in Parthia.
