The King Abdallah Canal ( Arabic قناة الملك عبد الله, DMG Qanāt al-Malik ʿAbd Allāh ) is the longest irrigation canal in Jordan .

Geography and water balance

It runs about two to three kilometers east of the Jordan and parallel to it. The capacity of the canal is 20 m³ / s at the northern inlet and 2.3 m³ / s at its southern end. The water flows through a natural gradient along its 110 km long total distance and overcomes a height difference of about 170 meters, starting at a height of about 230 meters below sea level down to almost 400 meters below sea level. He gets his water mainly from the Jarmuk and a small part from the Nahr ez-Zarqa .

history

The canal was built between 1959 and 1961. In the past it was known as the East Ghor Main Canal , in 1987 it was renamed the King Abdallah Canal in honor of Abdallah ibn Husain I of Jordan .
