Schwinge-Oste Canal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schwinge-Oste Canal , also known as the Elmer Schiffsgraben, connects the Oste with the Schwinge . The canal begins about 3.5 km below Bremervördes on the Oste and ends near the Schwingequelle at Mulsum .

Jürgen Christian Findorff initiated the construction in 1774, which was completed in 1778 except for a remaining length of 348 rods (about 1.6 km). This last section led through a twelve-meter-thick moor , so that it took another six years, namely until 1784, until Findorff declared the canal to be completed.

But as early as 1788, at a conference on peatland colonization, it was declared that the canal, although technically flawlessly built, had become damaged due to insufficient use (or lack of maintenance).

Now the canal may only be usable for paddle boats.
