The East Javanese Steam Tram Company , Dutch Oost Java Stoomtram Maatschappij , OJS for short , was a Dutch tram company on the island of Java in what is now Indonesia . She ran several tram companies on the island.

Jakarta

Tram operations in Jakarta began in 1869 with the establishment of a horse-drawn tram. The OJS replaced this in 1880 by setting up a steam tram in the so-called Cape Track with a gauge of 1067 millimeters , as the horses could not cope with the hard work in the tropical climate. On April 10, 1899, the company set up the first electric line. It was followed by a total of four more lines, with the steam tram being replaced in 1930. In 1962 the company was stopped.

Surabaya

The tram in Surabaya ran between June 7, 1888 and 1980. It also ran with a gauge of 1067 mm. It began with the installation of a steam tram from the port in Oedjoeng via the main train station and Wonokromo to Sepandjang . In 1923 the first electrically operated train was added. A total of four lines with a total line length of 24.8 kilometers were built. Between November 10, 1945 and July 1976, the railway was idle due to the aftermath of the Second World War . In 1968, the last three electric lines that remained after the war were stopped, but the steam tram survived until 1980.
