Osvaldo Piro

Osvaldo Carlos Piro (born January 1, 1937 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine bandoneonist and tango composer.

From the age of ten, Piro took bandoneon lessons with Félix Cordisco , later he was a student of Domingo Mattio (bandoneon), Pedro Rubione and Julio Nistal (harmony) and Juan Francisco Giacobbe (music theory). At the age of eleven he founded his first music trio, Osmasi . In 1952 he made his debut with Ricardo Pedevilla's orchestra , and the following year he joined the Alfredo Gobbis orchestra, of which he was a member for six years.

He then played in Fulvio Salamanca's orchestra before founding his own orchestra in 1965 at the age of twenty-eight, with which he made his debut on Radio Belgrano with the singer Carlos Nogués . He was invited to the La Falda Tango Festival that same year and recorded his first LP on the Alanicki label. In 1968 he was awarded the Palma de Oro at the Festival de La Falda and the Premio Martín Fierro of Argentine television. In the same year he recorded two LPs with Philips. In Mar del Plata he performed with his quintet and his wife, the singer Susana Rinaldi and musicians such as Edmundo Rivero , Aníbal Arias and Osvaldo Avena .

From 1984 to 1988 Piro lived in Europe and performed a. a. at the Festival de Arles , the Trottoirs de Buenos Aires in Paris, Holland, Finland, Sweden, Italy and Switzerland. After his return he founded the San Telmo Tango , where he performed with his group Ensamble 9 . He recorded the CD Romance de Abril with Ensamble 9 and guests Julián Plaza and Eladia Blázquez .

In 1994 Piro was appointed conductor of the Orquesta Nacional de Música Argentina Juan de Dios Filiberto , and in 1996 he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Buenos Aires. With pieces like Azulnoche and Octubre , Piro proves to be one of the most important tango composers of the generation after Astor Piazzolla .
