Otfrid Mittmann

Otfrid Mittmann (also: Otfried Mittmann; * December 27, 1908 in Ruda , Province of Silesia , † after 1968) was a German biostatistician who published on genetic issues during the National Socialist era.

Mittmann's father was a primary school teacher. He studied after high school in 1927 in Stettin mathematics and statistics specifically at the Universities of Goettingen and Leipzig. In 1935 he received his doctorate at the University of Göttingen (with Hans Georg Münzner and Alfred Kühn ). The dissertation dealt with mathematical questions of genetics ( mathematical-statistical investigations for the investigation of flowing characteristics ). He was a member of the NSDAP. He published essays on eugenics and the coercive measures used by the National Socialists in this area in the journal Deutsche Mathematik .

He also published in medical statistics after the Second World War, for example in 1964 on the incidence of bronchial carcinomas in North Rhine-Westphalia, although the authors could not determine any connection with cigarette consumption, and in 1968. In his publication from 1964 he is referred to as a biostatistician at the University of Bonn .

According to Volkmar Weiss , he is the founder of the probabilistic concept of type in genetics (probabilistic Mendelism), starting with his dissertation. His work remained without consequences in genetics according to Weiss and the relevant ideas were independently reintroduced from the 1970s ( Allan Birnbaum , Volkmar Weiss).
