Fruits of the Ottenbacher Schellerbirne

The Ottenbacher Schellerbirne is a Swiss variety of the pear ( Pyrus communis ).

Synonyms

A synonym for Ottenbacher Schellerbirne is Schellenbirne. The name “Scheller” probably comes from the property that the skin of the doughy pear can be peeled off (peeled off, dialect: peeled off).

Origin and Distribution

The variety comes from the Zurich municipality of Ottenbach . It was made famous by Heinrich Hegetschweiler, who owned the 200 year old tree in 1925. The mother tree is said to have grown up in a hedge. Even at the age of 200, he was still completely healthy and strong. The variety was apparently propagated as early as 1820.

tree

High trunk of the Ottenbacher Schellerbirne

The variety is extremely vital and productive. As a high trunk it forms tall and slim trees. The crown forms a tall pyramid. The growth is strong and upright. The yields start late but are then very good. The variety blooms medium late to late, is triploid and a poor pollen donor. The leaf is large, rounded and has a curved tip. It is dark green and very shiny, gray-green on the underside.

fruit

The fruit is medium-sized, pear-shaped, somewhat angular and has a flesh bulge on the stem. The stem is long, thin, sessile and fleshy into the fruit. The calyx is large and open, the calyx pit wide and flat. The meat is yellowish, firm, coarse, stony, juicy, very sweet, slightly sour and tart. If the weather is bad, the fruits hardly ripen.

use

The Ottenbacher Schellerbirne makes an excellent dried product

The must has a must weight of 55 to 60 ° Oechsle . The pear is best dried. To do this, however, you have to leave it until it is doughy. Then the bowl can simply be removed (see name "Scheller"). Products such as schnapps and pear mustard are made with the Schellerbirnen.

Harvest time and storage

The fruits ripen between mid-October and mid-November and can be stored for 4 to 5 weeks.

Diseases

Nothing is known about diseases.
