Otto Geleng

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Wilhelm Otto Geleng (* 1843 in Berlin ; † 1939 in Taormina ) was a German landscape painter , who found his motifs predominantly in Italy .

From 1863 he lived in Taormina in Sicily and painted numerous pictures of the view of Mount Etna and the sea, of the famous Greek theater and other historical buildings of the place. From 1872 to 1882 he was mayor of Taormina, which was unusual for a non-native at the time. He had a close friendship with the German photographer Wilhelm von Gloeden , who had also settled here.

In Italy he married Filomena Zuccaro; the resulting son Angelo Géleng (1867–?) was also a painter.
