Otto Nispel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otto Nispel was a German boxer , boxing trainer and referee .

After Otto Nispel had lost in the final against Willi Luis in 1923, he became German light heavyweight champion (up to 81 kg) in 1924, 1925 and 1926. He beat 19-year-old Max Schmeling in the final in 1924 . After the judges could not give a winner's verdict after three rounds, two extra rounds were fought, after which Nispel was declared the winner. Schmeling switched to the professional field after this fight. In 1927 Nispel was German runner-up in the heavyweight division (over 80 kg).

After his amateur career, Nispel became a referee and trainer. Among other things, he was Saarland regional trainer. He later became a professional referee. Nispel achieved dubious fame with the fight he directed between Gerhard Hecht and Sugar Ray Robinson on the Berlin Waldbühne . After Hecht was saved from knockout defeat by the gong in the first round, he went down again in the second round. Nispel rated Robinson's hit on the body, however, as a prohibited kidney blow and disqualified him. The outraged audience threw glass bottles at the ring and Robinson and his wife, who was sitting in the front row, had to hide under the ring until they were brought out of the hall by a police escort. The Nispels judgment was later converted into a "no decision" by a three-person commission and Nispel was banned for three months. Robinson later stated that Nispel gave the reason for his verdict that he wanted to "leave the ring alive".
