Otto Ursprung (born January 16, 1879 in Günzlhofen , † September 14, 1960 in Schondorf am Ammersee ) was a German musicologist .

Life

Origin studied philosophy and theology at the Freising Theological College and the University of Munich and was ordained a priest in 1904. He then studied music and musicology with Adolf Sandberger and Theodor Kroyer; he received his doctorate in 1911 with a dissertation on Jacobus de Kerle. From 1912 to 1926 he worked in Munich at the Theatinerkirche St. Kajetan, then until 1940 at the Allerheiligen-Hofkirche and taught music history as an honorary professor at the University of Munich from 1932 to 1949.

He was one of the most important Catholic church music researchers of his time, and he particularly benefited from his combination of musicological and theological training. He also made a significant contribution to the development of Munich's musical history.
