Political activity

Iven was involved in local politics at a young age. In 1964 he became a member of the CDU Mettmann and in 1972 moved to the city council. In 1980 he was also elected to the district council, to which he has belonged ever since.

In 1994 he was elected mayor of Mettmann as the successor to his party friend Ingrid Siebeke, who was not running again . In 1999 he applied in his party to be a candidate for the then full-time mayor's office, but did not find a majority in the CDU city association. The candidate presented by the party instead of him was defeated by the non-party Bodo Nowodworski . Iven continued to be politically active and a member of the city council.
