Ouertani

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ouertanis or Ouertatanis are one of the biggest Tunisian Amazigh - strains .

Meaning of the name

"Urti" means orchard in the Tamazight language, "Wurtan" or Ouertan is the plural form with an article, say "The orchards" in Tamazight language and at the same time the name of the tribe. Historical evidence is that orchards are in abundance in the town of Sra Ouertan, south of the town of Kef . The Romans used to call the city of Sra Ouertan "Altisira" because it is 397 meters above sea level and represents the highest point in its region. The origin of the word Ouertani ( Arabic ورتاني, DMG Wartānī ) from the Amazigh tribe name Ouertan has the Arabic grammar as its background and is understood by Arabic speakers as "relative to Ouertan".

Over the trunk

The history of the Ouertanis goes back to ancient times . They had and still have a great political and economic influence in North Africa and Tunisia. The Berber tribe of Ouertan had this influence since the pre-Islamic era of North Africa and lived peacefully with the Romans during the Roman era of Tunisia. Today they are mainly localized in northwestern Tunisia .

The majority of this tribe belonged in the colonial days of Tunisia (1881-1956) to the national freedom fighters Fellaga , who took up arms against the French occupation in order to defend and liberate their country. However, the Hādj Abdullah Ben Abdelmalik El Ouertani, who had procured weapons, ammunition and food for all Fellega , became famous .

In addition, many ouertanis were hafiz during the times of the Beys and were commissioned by the Bey to collect the zakat in their regions.

Ouertanis living in Tunisia today have Arabic with the Tunisian dialect as their mother tongue and are Sunni Muslims. They bear the Tunisian surname or family name Ouertani, which is particularly common in the cities of Kef, Kairouan and Tunis . Some ouertanis emigrated to France in the 1890s and colonial times . At least 197 people with the surname Ouertani have been born in France since 1890. Ouertani is ranked 49,565 in the list of the most common surnames in France.
