history

The school was founded in 1849 as a Roman Catholic monastery school. A main building was built between 1921 and 1923 based on a design by Scottish architect Thomas Baird . This was expanded between 1950 and 1954 with an extension. The design was provided by the architecture firm Gillespie, Kidd & Coia , which carried out numerous works within the Archdiocese of Glasgow. Gillespie, Kidd & Coia also planned the new building added between 1958 and 1964. It was opened on April 16, 1964. Isi Metzstein was in charge of the project, which was presented to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1965 . During the 1970s, Alexander Buchanan Campbell was entrusted with changes. In 1989 the school was closed. Today only the building that was built in the 1960s remains.

description

The former school is located at the confluence of Charlotte Street with Greendyke Street, east of Glasgow city center. Its modern design shows parallels to Le Corbusier's architecture . The facades are designed with blue-black brick and exposed concrete elements . The four-story main facade along Greendyke Street is seven axes wide. Glazed balconies emerge on the two upper floors. The horizontal glass elements contrast with the flat, vertically glazed staircase. A single-story wing extends along Charlotte Street. In terms of design, it largely corresponds to the main building.
