Out of Practice - Doktor, Single sucht… is a comedy series produced by CBS that first aired on September 19, 2005 in the United States . In Germany it has been broadcast by Comedy Central since spring 2007 .

action

The series is about the divorced couple Lydia and Stewart Barnes and their three grown children. The act begins around six months after the parents divorce. Although both of them are coping well with the situation at first glance, not all wounds are healed and important problems have not been addressed - this is already apparent in the first episode and is deepened in the following.

Ben Barnes is the youngest of the three siblings and the main character in the series. He is a marriage counselor and is the only family member who is not a doctor of medicine. The others therefore do not take it fully. In the pilot episode , his wife Naomi breaks up with him on the phone after seven years of marriage - this, too, undermines his self-confidence.

Dr. Stewart Barnes is a gastroenterologist . He has an affair with his receptionist, Crystal; but claims that this only started three months after the divorce. Although he often emphasizes how well his life has developed since then, he cannot shed old patterns of behavior as quickly as he would like.

Lydia Barnes is a cardiologist . She is very status-oriented and anxious not to be seen as a loser because of her divorce. She doesn't like the fact that her ex-husband is with the much younger Crystal. Your three children are therefore occasionally forced to take sides with one of the parents.

Oliver Barnes, the eldest of the three children, is a cosmetic surgeon . His income is much higher than that of the rest of the family. The fact that he can no longer keep his extravagant apartment after a lost compensation lawsuit and has to temporarily move in with his brother is a real blow to him. He is a womanizer for whom - for professional reasons - women are material to be designed and not equal partners. This attitude often leads to arguments between him and his siblings. The fact that Crystal was once one of his patients puts a strain on his relationship with his parents.

Regina Barnes is an emergency doctor at the clinic where her mother also works. She is a lesbian ; this is mentioned several times, but not discussed in more detail in the series.

background

The series was developed by Joe Keenan and Christopher Lloyd, who were also responsible for the hugely successful Frasier series . Accordingly, “Out of Practice” was advertised, but could not meet the expectations aroused. CBS therefore canceled the series due to low ratings in March 2006 after only 14 of the 22 episodes originally filmed. However, all episodes were broadcast on German television.

In July 2006, Stockard Channing was nominated for an Emmy for leading actress in a comedy series .
