Out of the Park Baseball , OOTP for short , is a text-based sports management computer game on the subject of baseball and comes from the German indie game developer Out of the Park Developments.
development
The first version was published in May 1999 by chief developer Markus Heinsohn and with the help of US sports journalist Sean Lahman. The first version received a lot of attention from various online game sites. The real breakthrough came with the release of OOTP 3 in 2001.
In 2002, Heinsohn teamed up with other indie game developers and founded .400 software studios to release the successor OOTP 5. In mid-2003, Heinsohn and some other developers parted ways with .400 software studios to continue working on the OOTP series.
In 2005 Sports Interactive , developer of Football Manager and NHL Eastside Hockey Manager , entered into a cooperation with Out of the Park Developments, Heinsohn remained in the role of chief developer. With Out of the Park Baseball 2006 released on May 31, 2006, the entire programming was revised and new features were added, which met with mixed criticism from many.
With Out of the Park Baseball 2007, which was released on March 23, 2007, the game received a far more positive review than the previous versions. Out of the Park Baseball 2007 was rated by Metacritic as the second best rated computer game with a rating of 96 out of 100 points, making it right behind the classic Half-Life 2 .
At the end of 2007, Out of the Park Developments separated by mutual agreement from Sports Interactive and has since acted as an independent developer and publisher of Out of the Park Baseball.
Out of the Park Baseball 15 was released on Steam on April 24, 2014 , after being available on the OOTP Developments website on April 18, 2014.
On March 22, 2016, OOTP 17 was released and, in addition to new 3D animations, also brought a game mode from the historic minor league, full MLBPA player licenses and other features to the game.
Gameplay
OOTP is primarily a text-based management simulation, which for the most part dispenses with complex 3D graphics and environments. The main task is to set up a baseball team, negotiate contracts and organize personnel and finances. In addition, the game allows the player to participate directly on match days by being able to actively intervene in team tactics and moves as a coach.
In addition to a classic career mode with all licensed MLB teams, the game also offers a historical game mode, a fictional league mode and online leagues.
Celebrity (US) players
The most prominent players of OOTP include the former pitcher Curt Schilling , the pitcher of the Houston Astros Pat Neshek, the wrestler Steve Corino and the owner of the Boston Red Sox John W. Henry.
