An overlock sewing machine (short: overlock ) is used to sew, overcast and precisely cut fabric in one operation with an overlock stitch . This is very time-saving and enables professional seams to be created quickly. In the past the overlock was mainly used in industry. It is now also used in many private households. An overlock can not replace a normal sewing machine as it is unsuitable for many functions, such as sewing buttons and sewing buttonholes. She specializes in fabric edges and can process them faster and more precisely than a normal sewing machine. Every overlock is equipped with at least four threads. Depending on the model, stitch types can be created with two, three, four or five threads. Two knives, one upper and one lower, are responsible for cutting the fabric. The upper knife is movable while the lower one is fixed. Most overlock sewing machines have the ability to disable the top knife so that fabric can be worked on without cutting it off. Each overlock also has two needles and two loops, an upper and a lower one. Different types of seams can be created with it.
