The Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) is an observatory for Radio Astronomy in California .

OVRO is a facility of the California Institute of Technology and is located near Bishop east of the Sierra Nevada , approximately 400 km north of Los Angeles at an altitude of 1,222 m. The main radio telescopes from OVRO are:

  • A millimeter interferometer made up of six antennas, each 10.4 m in diameter. This instrument was relocated to another location in 2005 as part of CARMA .
  • Two radio telescopes with 40 m and 5.5 m antenna diameter for investigations of the cosmic background radiation .
  • An interferometer consisting of two telescopes with a diameter of 27 m and three antennas with a diameter of 2 m for radio observations of the sun .
  • A telescope with a diameter of 25 m is part of the Very Long Baseline Array distributed over the USA .
