The Oxford University Gliding Club (German: Gliding Club of the University of Oxford, OUGC ) is the gliding club of the University of Oxford .

history

The club was founded in 1937 as part of the Oxford University and City Gliding Club . The first chief flight instructor was the glider pioneer Robert Kronfeld . The first flights were completed from Cummor Meadow in the spring of 1938. In the course of the year the club moved to the Chiltern Ridge, between Aston Rowant and Lewknor. Since all sport flying in Great Britain was discontinued with the beginning of the war in 1939, the club could not continue its activities during this time. In 1951 the club was re-established and in 1956 moved to Weston on the Green, a former Royal Air Force airfield .

In the early 1980s the club moved again to Bicester Airfield. The location was shared with the RAFGSA (gliding association of the Royal Air Force). At that time the club only owned one glider, a Schleicher Ka 7 , which was given as a gift from the local dentist Peter Pratelli. In the later years it was replaced by the two-seater Grob G103a Twin.

In January 1986, the club bought a Grob G 102 and sold the Twin. This was later replaced by the less powerful, but easier to fly Schleicher ASK 21 . Like all other aircraft, this one was financed by membership fees, which paid for the loans taken out.

Competitions and trips

The OUGC regularly participates in the Annual Gliding Varsity Match against the Cambridge University Gliding Club as well as the inter- university competitions. The club also makes trips to other glider airfields in Great Britain.
