Oxford spelling

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oxford spelling (short for Oxford English Dictionary spelling ) is a variant of the British spelling that uses the ending -ize instead of -ise , as in words like "globalization" and "recognize". Both -ize and -ise are correct spellings in British English. The ending -ize is preferred by Oxford University Press (OUP) and the dictionaries it publishes (such as Oxford English Dictionary , OED ). Oxford spelling can be marked with the IETF language tag en-GB-oxendict (or obsolete en-GB-oed ).

Oxford spelling is used in addition to many OUP publications by the British journal Nature , the magazine The Times Literary Supplement and many international organizations (United Nations, World Trade Organization, etc.).
