Papal Philosophical Institute Salzburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pontifical Philosophical Institute is canonically established as a philosophical institute under papal law in the manner of an ecclesiastical faculty (“ad instar facultatis”) at the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the Paris-Lodron University in Salzburg. It has the right to award ecclesiastical academic degrees in philosophy and is supported by the Benedictine " Salzburg Abbots Conference ".

history

The origins of the Philosophical Institute go back to the time of the Salzburg Benedictine University (1617 / 22-1810). In his post-doctoral thesis entitled: Thomistic Metaphysics at the old Benedictine University of Salzburg, Emmanuel J. Bauer reworks the orientation of the Thomistic school philosophy practiced in Salzburg in the 17th and 18th centuries, the spirituality of which had an impact well into the 20th century.

Orientation and research priorities

As a research direction within the theological faculty, philosophy takes particular account of those philosophical questions that arise from the religious dimension of human life, and shows the connections between the various philosophical approaches and the Christian image of the world, of man and of God. The department currently focuses on historical and systematic research in the areas of Philosophical Anthropology and Ethics, Metaphysics and Philosophical Doctrine of God , Philosophy of Religion and Philosophical Psychology.

courses

The study at the Pontifical Philosophical Institute consists of three sections:

  • the basic course (= 1st stage of the diploma course),
  • the main course (= 2nd stage of the diploma course)
  • the doctoral program.

Each of these study sections comprises at least four semesters. The basic course is concluded with the academic degree of the philosophical baccalaureate , the main course with that of the philosophical licentiate and the doctoral degree with the degree of the philosophical doctorate.

Salzburg Yearbook for Philosophy

The journal Salzburger Jahrbuch für Philosophie (founded in 1957) is published by the institute and aims to promote philosophical research with special consideration of the fundamental religious questions of man through systematic as well as historical research and book reviews. Her special interest is in classical philosophical questions. It is not bound to any particular school, period, or philosophical discipline.
