Põhja-Tallinn is an Estonian hip-hop / pop ensemble, named after a district of the same name, Põhja-Tallinn , which consists of three singers and a female singer from Pelgulinn , as well as a three-member live band from other parts of Tallinn .
history
In 2007 the three founding members from Põhja-Tallinn wrote the song Probleem as part of a music project. After the project was completed, the guitarist Eric Kammiste became a new member of the previous trio, which also made contact with drummer Robert Loigom and bassist Meelik Samel. The current seven-member band has been in existence since summer 2011.
The band presented their song Meil on aega veel in the Estonian preliminary competition for the Eurovision Song Contest "Eesti Laul 2013" and made it to the final. In the press, however, the song was said to be too similar to Johann Pachelbel's best-known work " Canon and Gigue in D major ", in the course of which the Estonian actor and singer Mart Sander performed the parody Ei löö käega me ("We do not give up" ) published. The President of the Estonian Composers' Association, Olav Ehala, and the composer Tauno Aints were commissioned to examine the allegations, who, despite the existing similarities, attested that they were sufficiently distant from Pachelbel's work . Allegations have also been refuted that the song had already been released in advance in the summer of 2011 together with a children's choir as part of an Estonian hip-hop festival. In the song Meil on aega veel , the choir members Loviisa Vahenurm, Anett Käärma, Mark Eemil Mustonen, Rainer Talvik, Kertu Noor and Kardo Talvik appear alongside the band.
In 2013, Põhja-Tallinn won three Estonian music awards:
- Volume of the year 2013
- Debut album of 2013
- Album of the year 2013 in the hip-hop / rap category
style
The band's music style is a mix of hip-hop , pop and rock . The lyrics are all written in the national language Estonian and written by the band members themselves. The lyrics are often about topics from the environment of the band members.
Record company
The band's first album was released by the record company "Masterhead Records", which was founded by the band members themselves. In an interview with the Õhtuleht newspaper , Jaanus Saks justified this step by stating that the market for musicians in Estonia was manageable. Marketing through third parties is therefore not worthwhile for the artist ("Grandma plaadifirma tegime seepärast, et Eesti on nii pisike ja kui lähed kellegi teise alla, siis võtab see firma kõik raha ära ja endale ei jäägi midagi.").
